In honor of Women's History Month Born in in New Rochelle, New York, Marjorie Tietjens grew up in Europe as her father was a European agent for an American company. Her art education included studying at the Royal Drawing Society in London and at the British Academy in Rome. Her travels led her back to the U.S. in 1932 where she made New York City her home. After a visit to New Mexico in 1942, Tietjens found her passion and spent the rest of her life painting its people, deserts, and mountains. Tietjens' first solo exhibition out west was at Texas Western University (now the University of Texas at El Paso in 1945, and she continued to exhibit for many years throughout the Southwest.
